Xwerx has several years experience working with some of Ireland’s best known organisations as they build their business-critical web applications. Working independently or in partnership with in-house development teams, we have provided the full suite of web application design services.
If you’re developing your own application, it’s likely that you will benefit from one or all of the options below. Let us know how we can help.
We can develop personas, or fictitious user descriptions, to explore the needs, limitations, behaviours and preferences of your users, to discover exactly what kind of web application would suit them best. A persona is generated from data collected from users, and from information about your target audience. It's a way to see the web application through the eyes of the users, from the perspective of their goals and interests.
We often produce a series of wireframes to describe the various steps through a website or web application. These wireframes detail which elements should appear on each screen, and provide the first impressions of how the application will flow. The wireframe also provides the blueprint for the web application, and informs the design process.
In good design, form follows function, and for a web application this is especially true. The graphic design determines how the web application will look; the layout, interface, colour scheme and typography are all developed during this phase. The goal of the design process is to produce an aesthetically pleasing experience, which strengthens the underlying workings of the web application.
Prototypes are used to gain insight into what the final web application will look like and how it will behave. There are some aspects of a web application which don't become apparent until a working prototype is produced, so a prototype is a very useful tool to discover any weaknesses or omissions in the application. These issues can then be addressed before the final finished version is created, thereby saving time and money.
We pay the same care and attention to building the HTML and CSS of your web application that we apply to building websites. We follow the standards set by the W3C, while also embracing some of the new standards which are gradually coming on-stream. We build clean, light-weight and easily maintained pages.
The usability of web applications is often enhanced by interface controls that can offer users superior manipulation over the data they are managing. We use the ExtJS framework to integrate controls such calendar-based date pickers, user friendly data grids, dynamic forms, tab management and advanced validation. These elements make the web application extremely responsive, enhancing the user experience significantly. We are happy to develop with other javascript frameworks, depending on client preferences.
