Thorntons Recycling is one of the most successful companies in Ireland's recycling industry, offering a wide range of services to commercial and domestic customers. Their materials handling and sorting facility in Dublin - the largest of its kind in Ireland – is licenced to handle 250,000 tonnes of material a year of which it recycles approx 85%.

The company has over 20,000 residential and commercial customers, while those clients located in the Dublin, Meath and Kildare area can avail of a range of Thornton’s services, including liquid waste/tanker services, general waste collection, confidential shredding and skip hire. They recently asked Xwerx to redesign its skip.ie website, the online facility that allows customers to order a skip for hire.

What they asked us to do

Thornton’s existing skip.ie website was underperforming – sales coming through it were low and there was a general feeling that an opportunity was being missed to capitalise on Thorntons’ existing strength in the waste recycling marketplace. Competition in the market is extremely strong and we knew that our approach had to be different to stand above the crowd.

Xwerx understood that this project was about enhancing the business offering as well as developing a new website. After some detailed workshops with the client, a new discount-based online service was proposed. Customers would receive discounts for being an existing Thorntons’ domestic customer, if they had a voucher code or simply for ordering online.

The end result is a website that focuses on value for money, promotes the idea of discounts to the customer and makes the ordering process hassle free.

In conjunction with a radio and direct mail campaign, orders to the website have increased by almost 800% when compared to the same period in 2008.
